Self-sufficiency is a real, long-term solution to poverty. Teaching people how to grow more food is what we do. When Send a Cow helps a family our ultimate aim is for them to be sustainable and independent of us, having all the skills and resources they need to prosper in the future. Our charity gifts do just that.
Growing gifts are passed on by giving seeds and saplings to other families in need to nurture and grow.

Mankutloang Monmaheng, Lesotho
Mankutloang’s medicinal shrubs help keep her community healthy and give her an extra income!
Mankutloang Monmaheng from Lesotho is now the local herbalist in her area. She grows an impressive variety of herbs, including aloe vera, mint, comfrey and many other plants.
They all help treat a variety of illnesses and complaints, including sores and rashes. They also provide treatments for animals.
She charges on average 350 rand for treatments – or just 20 rand (20p) for the children who come with diarrhoea and headaches (20p). This income, plus her training in sustainable organic agriculture, has changed her life. She says she never goes hungry.
